Nigerian Army to kick off operation 'Crocodile Smile II' this Friday

The Nigerian Army is set to flag off Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II on Friday, October 13, 2017. Below is a statement signed by Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, Director Army Public Relations.

The Exercise, set to span across 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army (2, 6 and 81 Divisions), is in line with the 2017 Training Directives which aims at training troops in the conduct of Internal Security Operations in aid of Civil Authorities across the various formations’ areas of responsibilities, based on Constitutional provisions.

It will be recalled that last year, between November and December 2016, Exercise CROCODILE SMILE I was conducted within the Niger Delta States to curtail prevailing security challenges then. These challenges include illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping and militancy amongst others. Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II is specifically designed to further the gains and consolidate on the successes of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE I. Additionally, with the operationalization of 6 Division Nigerian Army, earlier in the year, the need to exercise troops in an amphibious environment makes it expedient to hold Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II. Moreover, this exercise will complement the on-going Exercise EGWU EKE II in the South-Eastern part of the country.

Let us not be quick to forget the scenario in which these exercises are carried out. EGWU EKE II became expedient due to the mindless assassinations (even in religious places), attack on security personnel, theft of weapons, armed banditry, kidnapping and cultism, among other security challenges. In a similar vein, security challenges in the South West and Niger Delta geo-political regions such as illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, cultism, kidnapping, militancy and other challenges are becoming rampant.

The need for troops to sharpen their skills to cope with these security challenges within the 2, 6 and 81 Divisions’ Area of Responsibilities calls for the conduct of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II. Also, in actualizing the Chief of Army Staff’s vision, which is to ‘To have a Professionally Responsive Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles’, accentuates the call for the conduct of this exercise in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies. This exercise will therefore be conducted with the involvement of other security agencies such as the Nigerian Police and Nigeria Security, Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, just to mention a few.

EXERCISE CROCODILE SMILE II is also conceptualized to leverage on real time intelligence to curtail insecurity, thereby fulfilling both training and operational objectives. Accordingly, Exercise Headquarters would be established in the field to facilitate open communication between members of the public and exercising troops. Emphasis will be placed on raids, cordon and search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and other amphibious operations. Community support activities such as medical outreaches will also feature prominently during the Exercise.

In this regard, members of the public are enjoined not to panic on seeing the movement of military equipment and troops to staging areas as their safety and well-being is guaranteed at all times. The public is also requested to remain vigilant, security conscious and report suspected criminals who will likely flee the military exercise areas to find safe haven among communities. Contact phone numbers of all Brigade Commanders in the exercise areas would be made public in addition to the Nigerian Army short code Information and call Centre 193. You are please requested to disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

TStv: Nigerians Excited as New Pay TV Launches

The commercial launch of TStv (Telcom Satellite TV) in Nigeria held in Abuja on Sunday October 1, 2017.

Nigerians across the country believe that the launch could not have come at a better time, expressing delight that MultiChoice’s monopoly in the pay TV business in Nigeria is over.

They also hail the idea of October 1 (Nigeria’s independence day) as roll out date, noting that the development signifies their freedom from existing pay TV providers, such as DStv, GOtv, StarTimes, MyTv, Joy Tv, among others.

Mr. Musa Bello, a civil servant, said he was elated when he heard that TStv was making entrant into the market.

“Nigerians have long prayed for this moment. The exploitation by existing providers is too much”, he lamented.

“How can someone be away from home for days or weeks and then lose all your subscription. I understand TStv is not like that.

“So for this reason and the fact that it is affordable, has many interesting channels and a promise of strong signal, I am ready to buy immediately.”

Also speaking, Mrs Eunice Agbo, a businesswoman, vowed to patronise the TStv. She disclosed that her daughter had explained the advantages and services of the new pay TV, adding that “I’m in love with this service provide already”.

“Competition is good. So for those who have been treating us how they like all these years, their time is up because millions will port to TStv within one month.”

TStv introduces the Pay-as-You-Consume model, an option other providers had insisted was not possible, arguing that they bought the contents they relay as a whole and not in bits.

The DTH pay TV, offers 200 rich blend of local and international channels and packages for entertainment, including news, sports, kids, health, etc.

These will be distributed on the ABS 3A Africa beam, located at 3 degrees west, beginning with 100 channels. TStv will also show live sports like Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League and much more.

Some sport channels on TStv Africa are Sport 1-10, Fox Sport HD, and Ts Sports. Running on 4.5G network, every subscriber will get 20G of data for N3,000 monthly. The data can also be used for video calls conferences with camera and WiFi.

The TStv decoder has 50GB hard disk to record TV programmes and a pause/play function.

Bright Echefu, Managing Director of TStv, during the signing of the multi-transponder agreement with their ABS partner, said their services would offer viewers the experience of HD and SD video, internet services, broadband, TV and radio, at a very affordable rate.

“What makes the project unique is that it would start with 100 channels of local, regional and international programmes in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ghanaian, Sierra Leonean, Liberian languages, among others”, he said.

Echefu noted that TStv has the right content and premium product to satisfy the growing demand of Nigerians.

“It would assist ABS take Nollywood and Sport to great heights. Their sport channels is the bomb! EPL, La liga, and Champion League are amazing!

“With TStv, you don’t need to pay subscription monthly or periodically. You pay as you consume.

“It is the first Nigerian TV to launch a pay-as-you-consume, so you can pause your subscription whenever you are travelling.

“It is just N5000 for the decoder and dish and subscription prices ranges from N200, N500, N1,000, N1,500 and N3,000, respectively”, he said.

TStv Africa aims to cover the 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but will launch first in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Owerri and Kano.

Also speaking, Madu Ugo, Head of Corporate Communications, welcomed Nigerians to “a new world”.

He assured citizens that TStv will “ensure that their yearnings about pay TV are met”.

“We are here to provide the best products and services. We urge every one to get their decoders and start enjoying sports, news, movies, documentaries, soap operas and others”.

Area boys clash over girlfriend, vandalize 150 vehicles in Lagos

Uneasiness has pervaded Idi Araba and Olorunishola communities in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State after bloody clashes between two factional gangs in the neighbourhoods.

No fewer than 150 vehicles parked in compounds and by the roadsides were reportedly vandalised during the clashes, while some members of the factions were injured.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the rift was the climax of a supremacy battle between Idi Araba boys and Olorunnishola boys which started about four years ago.

Our correspondent learnt that the rival gangs had maintained peace for some months before the battle was rekindled penultimate Saturday during a party organised by a lady on Olanrewaju Street, off Itire Road.

The unnamed lady was reportedly in a relationship with two men, each from the two factions.

It was said that members of both gangs had attended the party that day and as it progressed, a fight broke out between gang members.

A resident, who did not want his name in print for security reason, said one Faruk of Olorunnishola boys escalated the fight after he smashed a bottle on Abbey, a “strong member of Idi Araba boys.”

He said Abbey’s gang members regrouped and went on a reprisal to Olorunishola community to unleash mayhem.

He said, “Olorunishola boys also came to Idi Araba, Folarin Street and other neighouring streets around 12.30am on Sunday, September 10. They destroyed about 150 vehicles.

“Idi Araba boys comprised thugs from Daniyan, Sea Side, Lawanson, Odutan and Adekunle areas; and they are led by Emo, Sule Jagaban and Bere.

“Olorunishola boys also comprised hoodlums from Daniel, Morgan, Shittu, Igbeyin Adun streets and Ojuwoye in Mushin. They were led by Mopol and Bobo. Some of them are cult members.

“The lady that organised the party was dating members of both factions. The lady was given a post in her church and she celebrated it on that day. The party could not contain the two rival gangs.”

Another resident, who gave his name only as Samuel, said the hoodlums cashed in on the clashes to rob residents of their valuables.

He added that the gangs clashed again last Friday during which two persons were hit with cutlasses in the head and hand respectively.

“Apart from destroying property, they entered into houses to steal laptops, generators, televisions and other items. Everybody here is afraid. We need more security and we want the police to stop the gangs from causing more havoc,” Samuel said.

A car dealer, Lukman Ninalowo, said his car and that of his wife, parked on Folarin Street, were destroyed during the midnight mayhem.

He said, “They damaged the two cars – Mitsubishi and Sienna – and I have reported the vandalism at the Itire Police Division. They broke the glass on the driver’s side of the Mitsubishi and smashed the windscreens of the Sienna. They came at night armed with cutlasses.

“Over 40 vehicles were vandalised on Folarin Street alone. They also entered premises and destroyed vehicles, including a car that a mechanic repaired for his customer.

“We urge the Lagos State Police Command to deploy more operatives in this area to support the Itire division. We learnt that four of the suspects were arrested and taken to court.”

Another victim, Mr. Taiwo Adeneike, a civil servant said, he had no idea of how to raise fund to repair his vandalised car.

“They broke the windscreen and the driver’s side glass of my BMW E36. The fight has been on for a long time, but that of Sunday assumed another dimension. I had slept off. I suddenly started hearing noises. By the time I came out, a lot of vehicles had been destroyed. The DPO of the Itire Police Division came that night,” he added.

The Chairman, Ifetedo Community Development Association, Ishaga Close, Idi Araba, Mr. Rasheed Bakare, called on the state government to intervene, noting that the gangs had created panic in the affected communities.

He said, “The cause of their fight is always baseless. Whenever they clash, it is innocent residents who bear the brunt. Vehicles parked on Itire Road, Morgan, Olorunishola, Durojola streets and Lawanson were damaged Over 100 vehicles were vandalised. I personally counted over 50 damaged vehicles on Folarin Street.

“Whenever there is any misunderstanding, they start destroying property and robbing people. We want the state government to intervene because it is getting out of hands.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police had started a regular patrol of the areas.

He said, “Arrests were made and suspects have been charged to court. A raid was also conducted and five male suspects were taken to the Lagos State Task Force office in Oshodi.

“Apart from police patrol, we are also holding meetings with stakeholders in the communities to avoid any breakdown of law and order.”
